Virtual Concert with Canal Street String Band
“Grant Rogers and Delaware County’s Homespun Music”
Saturday, June 5, 2021, 7:00-8:00 p.m.
Via Zoom Webinar (register here)
The Grant Rogers Project, a collaboration between Music on the Delaware and the William B. Ogden Library, is pleased to present a free virtual concert with musicians from the Canal Street String Band on Saturday, June 5, 2021, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. The title of the program will be “Grant Rogers and Delaware County’s Homespun Music.” The concert will be available on a Zoom Webinar.
This special concert will emphasize the music of Grant Rogers, a mid-1900s popular Delaware County fiddler, guitarist and singer, as well as music from the wider Delaware County area. A special feature will be a couple of tunes recently discovered that were played by Grant’s mother and a neighbor. The concert will also include other pieces from the broader American folk tradition.
It is appropriate for the Canal Street String Band to return to the Grant Rogers Project stage (even if the stage is virtual), as it was a Music on the Delaware concert in 2014 with the same band in which a couple of Grant Rogers’ songs were featured. This served as a reminder to local folks of the legacy of Grant Rogers and his contemporaries, and prompted members of Music on the Delaware and the Library to create a project to preserve the music, dancing, and storytelling of this area. The Grant Rogers Project Committee began to do interviews with local musicians, created a website (grantrogers.org), collected relevant materials, and has sponsored a variety of workshops and concerts around the topic of traditional music and dance over the past five years. Audio, video, and print records of these events, as well as Grant Rogers’ history and recordings, have all been archived on the Grant Rogers website.
Members of the Canal Street String Band are Phil Banaszak, Dave Ruch, and Jim Whitford. Phil plays fiddle, mandolin and guitar. He is a New York State fiddle champion and a member of the North American Fiddlers Hall of Fame. Dave Ruch is a full-time musician/performer/music researcher/teaching artist, and plays mandolin, guitar, banjo, octave mandolin, bones, spoons, jaw harp and probably some other things too. Jim is a Buffalo Music Hall of Famer and plays the string bass, dobro and guitar. All three of them sing. More information can be found at www.canalstreetstringband.com.
