Working in 60-70 schools each year as a teaching artist and performer, in an incredibly diverse mix of communities, I have the opportunity to see all kinds of teaching styles and practices in place.
It’s not hard to gauge the culture of a classroom, or an entire school, really, in a fairly short amount of time based on how administrators and teachers relate to me, how they relate to students, and how students relate back to them and to each other.
Many of the things I see are pretty inspiring. Here’s one of them:
